Long Overdue Update and a Knitting Pattern!

What a semester it's been!

To catch everyone up, I ended up injuring my knee on day 22 of 30 of my running challenge and ended up having to take 8 weeks off. Since then I've still had pain in my knee so my running is limited to one day per week and only one mile at a time for now until I build up strength and stop having pain. I miss running and it's been hard to find other activities to do that don't put stress on my knee and that I enjoy. I hate biking so that is out. To be fair, I tried it for a couple of weeks and found zero enjoyment out of it.

The school semester started in August and kept me pretty busy. Working full time and going to school took up just about all of my time and this spring semester is shaping up to be even more time consuming. But, the finish line is in sight! If all goes according to plan and I get all the classes I need in Spring and Fall, I should be graduating in Fall!

The holidays snuck up on me and I didn't have time to knit anyone anything. I was planning on knitting my dad another beanie. I started and finished it this week since I am off of work. It turned out pretty good, I think he'll like it. I also got some nice Malabrigo Twist yarn that I made into a beanie. I am in love with this yarn. It was great to knit with, soft and didn't separate when I had to froggy it a couple of times. The beanie I made is so comfy. The pattern is up on my Etsy, Ravelry, and Craftsy stores.

I have one more skein of this yarn and am not sure what to make with it. Obviously something I can wear all the time since the yarn is so soft and comfortable. Maybe some fingerless gloves? Ideas are welcome :)

Did you have a nice holiday? Any plans for New Year's Eve?

Days 18, 19, and 20 of 30 Day Running Challenge

I slacked off this weekend and didn't post my updates for my running challenge. Saturday was a great run. My hubby ran with me and left the dogs at home and ran a fast mile. I didn't document it with my normal selfie though.

Sunday I took a break since it was our 1 year wedding anniversary. We had a great day eating and celebrating so I figured I could have one day off.

Today I did my 20th day (sort of). It was really really hot outside. Hershey and I only ran a mile but with the heat it felt like 10 miles. We ran it pretty fast too, I was surprised when I had finished to see that it was 9ish minutes. Really felt a lot longer.

Hershey clearly enjoyed the run. She's pretty adorable and I love that she enjoys running with me.

WIP - Eyelet Scarf with Knit One Crochet Too Ty-Dy Superkid Yarn

yarn

I love this yarn. LOVE it. It's soft and gorgeous and really easy to work with. It's Knit One Crochet Too Ty-Dy Superkid in color 7713 Berry Patch. I got the idea for this pattern from the Eyelet Cowl that I created a while back that you can find the WIP post here and the FO and free pattern post here.

So far I love how the scarf is turning out. The colors are fantastic and the pattern looks great. I haven't had much time to work on it with the busy schedule I've had recently but I'm hoping to have it finished very soon so I can share the pattern with the world!

Day 17 of 30 Day Running Challenge

Day 17!

I got my hair done before my run and almost didn't run when I got home. But then I remembered that I have to run in order to prove to myself that I can do it. Plus I feel really good when I finish a run, like I accomplished something today. Not that I don't accomplish lots of things throughout the day, but there is something about working out and running in particular that just makes me feel like I did a lot.

I took Bones along with Hershey today. They both did just o.k. up until .75 when Bones said "Stick a fork in me, I'm DONE". I had to carry him the last quarter mile of the run. That really slowed my time down. I was feeling pretty fast until that point, and really I still finished pretty strong considering I was carrying a 15lb puppy dog.

Hershey on the other hand kept pulling ahead. It's like the "heel" training we've done never happened. Then when I was carrying Bones she kept trying to go in the grass and mark her territory. Overall not the best run for the pups but also not the worst.

Didn't get them in the selfie today since they were not worthy. Tomorrow I'm sure they'll do much better.

Day 16 of 30 Day Running Challenge

Happy Day 16! Today's weather was perfect and I felt pretty good. Some leg pain towards the very end but overall not bad at all. I felt good about my time, even though Hershey had a potty break in there which slowed us down. Overall it was a great running day!

On our way home, we passed another crazy man who started talking to Hershey. She promptly growled at him and then went about her business as my running partner. I have no doubt that she would protect me if someone got too close. She's got a big attitude for her little chihuahua body!

Day 15 of 30 Day Running Challenge - Halfway There!

I have officially made it halfway! It doesn't seem like 15 whole days have passed. It feels pretty good to get this far, even with another 15 days to go.

Today's run felt pretty good. My left shin is still pretty sore though. These past 15 days I sort of see a trend. I can usually do a long run (long being a mere 2 miles), then two or three shorter runs (1-1.5 miles), then another long run. My shin is usually always sore if I do more than 1.5 miles and then takes two or three days to feel strong and healthy enough to run 2 miles. It's actually extremely frustrating. I want to be able to run 3 miles daily, without any pain. I just want NO PAIN! On the bright side, I have been able to run consistently, everyday, for 15 days in a row without having so much pain that I skip a day. I had been at that point a few months ago so there is progress at least!

Hershey did wonderfully today. She stayed right next to me the whole time and didn't fall behind or slow down. She also didn't try to chase any squirrels or geese ha!

Day 14 of 30 Day Running Challenge

I'm getting slightly faster! Almost back to my 8:12 mile and hopefully can get down to under 8 before too long!

It was pretty stinkin' hot today only because it was humid. It's hardly ever humid here so that was unusual. Other than that the run felt pretty good. Once I stopped though my shins got really tight and feel pretty sore again. I'm not sure what is going on - I've been doing my exercises that physical therapy gave me, which should be helping. Maybe I just need to ice more often.

Hershey wasn't exactly in the mood to run today. When I grabbed her leash she just stayed where she was and didn't get super excited like normal. I think her paw is still sore from the bee sting and it was pretty warm out yesterday so she got pretty pooped last night. She stuck with me though and only lagged behind a couple of times.

Day 13 of 30 Day Running Challenge

Day 13 is down! It was another hot day today but at least it was under 100. For a Monday I feel pretty good about the 2 miles I put in. I really wanted to do 3 but those pesky shins and knee pains just won't let up! It's much better than it was a month ago but still not completely gone.

Hershey enjoyed the run, despite the photo above. She kind of looks high but I think it was more of a "let me inside I'm freaking hot" look. Her paw is still a little tender from that bee sting over the weekend so by the end of the run she had a slight limp.

All around, it was a great run, better that we both did only 2 miles and didn't push it with injuries.

FO - Baby Blue Beanie With Party Tassels

knit baby hat

It's finished! A couple of weeks ago I posted a WIP for a beanie I was knitting and just making up as I go. It turned out better than I anticipated. The color is perfect and the yarn was so nice to knit with.

knit baby beanie

This was knit with Lion Brand Yarns Baby's First in Sea Sprite color. I couldn't find my circular needles at the time so I knit this with DPNs and ended up with some small ladders between each needles. I haven't knit with DPNs much, I think one or two projects I've done needed them for the entire project, the rest of the time I just use them for the tops of the beanies that knit.

knit baby blue hat

The finished beanie fits a 3-6 month old. I didn't measure it before I wrapped it as a gift for my friend who is having a baby soon but I'd estimate that the circumference is about 16 inches and the height is about 7 inches.

Knit baby blue hat

The tassels were surprisingly easy to make. I hadn't ever made tassels in the past so was nervous about getting it right. I ended up wrapping my yarn around a bookmark several times then looping one strand through all of the wrapped strands and tying a knit. Then I cut the loops of the bunch at the bottom to create the tassels. Easy peasy!

Day 12 of 30 Day Running Challenge

When I got up to do my run this morning I thought I was going to get 2 miles or more since I was feeling great and the weather was just right. Unfortunately, Bones had other plans. He wasn't feeling up to running fast and when I'd get to a comfortable speed for me he would just stop and lay down in the middle of the path. This happened a few times before I figured out that he wanted to run slower. I slowed down but then a strange man appeared ahead of us yelling about something to no one in particular (don't do drugs people). He terrified Bones who refused to go a step further towards this person. So we turned around and came home.

I think Bones may have done me a favor though. Since my legs have been so sore the past couple of days it would have been a bad idea to try to push 2 or more miles out of them today. Even though they felt great today I think an easy run is going to help in the long term. Tomorrow is a new day and we'll see how everything is feeling. It's supposed to be in the 100's temperature-wise so I may be running alone tomorrow, which will be good since I can run at my speed and my distance without worrying about my little furry babies.

Day 11 of 30

Happy July 5th! I got my run out of the way early this morning. I was still pretty sore but the morning was so beautiful that I ended up running 1.5 miles instead of the 1 mile I had planned. I didn't even want to stop at 1.5 but my shins were starting to get painful and not just sore.

After our run I took the dogs to the dog park again. Bones had fun chasing a little chihuahua around. Hershey got her first bee sting though so she was limping around most of the time we were there. Her paw is much better now, luckily.

Day 10 of 30 Day Running Challenge

Happy 4th Of July!!! It's such a beautiful day here today. Unfortunately I haven't been outside much to enjoy it! My goal this long weekend is to get our spare bedroom completely cleaned out since we have a friend moving in with us in August. In order to clean out the spare room I needed to completely reorganize my closet, the hall closet, and the living room. Today I wanted to get the bulk of it done so I can relax mostly tomorrow and Sunday.

I did get out for my daily run this morning and took my pups. My legs were so very sore today so I ran the slowest mile and then walked another mile with the dogs so they got some exercise in. I'm hoping tomorrow my legs aren't as sore so I can get a longer run in or even just a fast mile. Definitely going to be icing today and hopefully convince my hubby that I deserve a calf/shin massage ha!

After our jog/walk I took the dogs to the dog park where they played for about an hour. We saw this super awesome dog who had limited use of her front legs so her dad got her wheels! She doesn't act like she has only two legs and two wheels though. She's fast, playful, and very sweet. Bones really liked her too and kept following her around the park.

Bones is so tired after all of the fun today that he couldn't quite make it to his dog bed.

Day 9 of 30 Day Running Challenge

Happy start to the 4th of July weekend! Mark another day off of my 30 day calendar. I feel fantastic! Yesterday I really started feeling more energetic from running every day. Today I felt really great too, didn't feel out of breath and the soreness in my legs didn't start up until I was at 1.9 miles. It was a bit warm today again so I'm glad that the three day week will be here so I can get my runs done early before the heat sets in.

At the start of our run we ran into Hershey's friends Fez and Chichi. I should have snapped a photo of them, and definitely will next time. Fez is pretty adorable because he and Hershey really like each other and their tails start going a mile a minute with excitement. Chichi is cute too but she isn't exactly friendly towards dogs not named Fez. Hershey wanted to play with both of them but we had to get our run done.

One cool thing about today was that the tower bridge went up to let a boat through. The last time I saw that happen a giant boat came through but today it was a teeny tiny sail boat that was just really tall. It was pretty neat so of course I had to stop to take a couple of pictures.

July Goals - Monthly Goals

Monthly Goals

I just found this blog today (it's amazing you should check it out now) and thought it would be not only fun, but also proactive to join this hop. I really like planning things and setting goals for myself but I never really thought to share them with you!

Here it goes!

1. Finish my 30 Day Running Challenge
2. Finish one of my WIP knitting projects
3. Clean out the spare bedroom
4. Clean out and organize my knitting stash
5. Take a bag lunch at least 4 days a week each week

Day 8 of 30 Day Running Challenge

Day 8 is now behind me! Today made up for yesterday pain-wise. No soreness, no twinges of pain. Everything felt fantastic! Still not back to my fastest mile time yet (7:58), but I will get there. I have less than 1 minute to shave off since I did today's 1 miler in 8:49. I'll get there!

Hershey didn't really want to run today. She was a slowpoke! I think she would have much rather moseyed around sniffing plants and other smells her doggy nose picks up. It's still been too warm to take Mr. Bones, which makes him sad. Since it's a 3-day weekend I'll be getting up when it's still cool enough to take him.

Day 7 of 30 Day Running Challenge

Day 7 is complete! I've done a whole week of running at least one mile every day. I've had some shin pains here and there but overall I am feeling really good. I'm creeping up my distance and trying to increase my speed. I'm still a little turtle-y but I'll get there!

Today I had some shin pain, not soreness, but pain. My left shin which has typically been the better feeling shin, had some sharp stabbing pain. I ran through it but slowed way down. I was about halfway through and was determined to finish the 1.5 miles. I ended up slowing down and the pain went away. I was hoping for a pace of 9:45 but ended up at 10:11. Hopefully tomorrow I don't have the pain and can run a super quick mile.

Hershey of course got another compliment today. A nice, but somewhat creepy, guy said that she looked like a good dog. Then she growled a little at him because she doesn't like strangers. Hell, I don't like strangers either.

Day 6 of 30 Day Running Challenge

Day 6 today. It was 105 at 4:30pm when I went running. I know, what kind of crazy person goes running at 4fucking30pm when it's over 100 degrees outside? Me. I can't wait until it starts cooling down in the evening otherwise I'll lose my motivation and won't end up going. I've tried it. Trust me. At 5pm something hits me and I will absolutely not do a thing the rest of the night. My couch is too comfy and I kind of like watching the news and knitting.

Today I actually felt really good. No pain in my shins and not winded. I sweat a lot though. Like a lot a lot. And poor Hershey was pretty hot by the end. I almost didn't bring her with me since it's so hot outside. I took her out to test the ground and she was ready to go so I ran as far as she would go before she started slowing down. Then we walked the rest of the way home. I carried her a little bit of the way so her pads didn't get burnt from the asphalt. Luckily a lot of the route I took today was shady so the ground wasn't too warm for her most of the way. She's such a great running partner and of course got ANOTHER compliment today on how adorable she is. I don't think there will be a day that she doesn't get complimented.

WIP - Lily of the Valley Scarf

I am so proud of this WIP and I only have about 3 inches of my very long scarf complete. I had purchased the Alpaca with a Twist Fino in royal velvet for a knitting pattern that I got through Vogue knitting.

knitting yarn

Me being the detail-oriented person I am, wound up my ball of yarn before reading the pattern, which calls for double knitting. Alas, my single ball of yarn would not do, and I was not about to unwind, then rewind more than 800 yards worth of yarn. So I set out to find a pattern that would do this gorgeous yarn justice. I looked through my stitch library and found the lily of the valley pattern and knew that was it.

knitting yarn

This pattern is going to take a while to knit, just doing this small patch has taken me a few hours. I try to work on it a little bit each day but I have no deadline to meet with this so I'm taking my time. It's knit on US size 3 needles and I have a CO of 56. The yarn can piece when knitting if I knit too tightly so I'm having to learn to loosen up my knitting a bit. I usually prefer knitting with bulkier weight yarn since it knits up quickly. I like the gratification of finishing a project quickly so I'm learning patience with this project. Something I need!

knitting yarn

When I'm all finished I might gift it to my mom or sister for Christmas if I want to part with it, but it will probably just be added to my massive scarf and cowl collection. Soon I'll have one for every day of the year!

Top 5 Blog Posts of the Week - June 29

1. Scattered Thoughts of a Crafty Mom - Simple 5 Inch Fabric Flower Tutorial
These flowers are so adorable. They are a quick and easy project and yet they are so freaking cute!

2. The Thinking Closet - One Change I Made That Is Bringing Me More Balance
This post really rings true for me. During the school semester I feel incredibly overwhelmed and underwater. Now that I'm on summer break I am going to start implementing a morning routine and then expand it to a daily routine so that I don't fall behind and don't end up feeling like I'm up a creek without a paddle.

3. Knitting Craft Gossip.Com - 10 Shawls to Knit This Summer
I haven't knit a shawl yet but I keep seeing them everywhere so this post has got me inspired. I'm going to knit one - after my WIPs are finished of course.

4. Tin Can Knits - How to Block a Lace Shawl
This tutorial is so detailed and really helps to explain blocking. I have yet to block my first piece but once my lily of the valley scarf is complete I will need to block. I like this technique and will probably follow the tutorial!

5. Decor to Adore - $3 Summertime Hostess Gift
I always struggle to think of gifts to get for the hostess whenever I am invited to a party or a friends house for a nice dinner. This solves my problem, at least for this summer! It's inexpensive, useful, and stylish.

That wraps up my top 5 favorite posts of the week. Hope you enjoyed them and see you next week!

Day 5 of the 30 Day Running Challenge

Day 5! So far so good. I didn't end up running a longer run today like I had wanted. I convinced my hubby to run with me and my selling point was "short run" so we ran as fast as could with both dogs and stopped at a mile. It worked out perfectly!

The short distance today was probably a better idea anyway. I didn't have any pain during the run and I think if I had tried a longer run I'd be pretty sore, maybe in pain. Better for me to take it slow and not re-injure my shins!

My hubby ran with seasoned pro, Hershey, while I ran with newbie runner Bones. Bones is still a puppy so he has a lot of energy but he is not a distance runner at all. He's part pekingese, which are pretty low energy dogs in general. He really loves Hershey though so he tries to keep up with her, it's pretty adorable. It's also bath day so he's really going to be pooped the rest of the day from all of the excitement. Hershey won't be, she'll be her crazy energetic self all day long.

Day 4 of the 30 Day Running Challenge

Day 4! Today it was pretty hard to get out of bed and get my run done early. I had these grand plans to get up at 7am, drink a protein shake, stretch, get on the pavement by 7:30 and be done by 8:00, just in time to do an upper body workout on the jungle gym before the children swarmed it. Wishful thinking. I didn't get out of bed until 9, got on the road by 9:30 to run. When I was ready for my jungle gym workout there were hoards of kids playing on it.

But, I got my run in. A solid 2 miles without pain, but with a lot of soreness. It was also pretty slow going. Tomorrow I'm hoping to get 3 miles in at the same pace I ran today - 11ish minutes per mile. It's pretty freaking slow but as long as there is no pain, I'll take the turtle speed.

My legs are pretty sore today, shins specifically. The soreness went away about half a mile in so I just kept going. Right about 2 miles is when the soreness came back and I stopped so I can save some energy for a longer run tomorrow. Definitely going to ice and stretch today and hopefully tomorrow I'll be good as new!

Hershey got a lot of "aww" comments this morning. And really, she's freaking adorable with her bright pink flower and her perky ears. Her leash etiquette was horrible today. It was as if I had never trained her. She kept pulling ahead and trying to chase geese. Geese that are three times larger than her. She's got the small-dog complex and thinks she's much larger than she actually is.

Day 3 of the 30 Day Running Challenge

Today is Day 3 of the 30 Day Running Challenge. I was pretty tired to be honest. It was fairly warm out ~90 degrees, which isn't too bad but for some reason I was just not feeling it today. I did complete 1 mile, but it felt like I was running with bricks tied to my legs and it seemed to take an hour. In reality it was only about 9:30. I think Hershey was pretty much over it as well. She wasn't her perky waggy self today.

My legs were pretty sore, they aren't used to running everyday so I just have to make sure to stretch, ice, and foam roll. Plus do my physical therapy exercises to strengthen my muscles overall. Tomorrow's run will be in the morning before the heat gets here so I'm hoping that I'll feel more energetic and get a good solid run in.

Day 2 of 30 of the 30 Day Running Challenge

Today was day 2 and I felt pretty good! My knee was sore when I hit 1.5 miles and didn't let up until I stopped running at 1.84. My pace felt good, definitely slowed down a lot towards the end though. Averaged a 10 minute/mile pace, can't complain!

Miss Hershey did wonderful again today. It wasn't too warm for her and we didn't run far enough to really tire her out. Still very fun for her since she loves going on runs. Luckily today she did her business before we ran so there was no potty break needed in the middle of it haha!

30 Day Running Challenge - Day 1

I've been running on and off for about a year now. I've had to take extended breaks due some lingering muscle weakness that I've *hopefully* resolved. Now that I'm feeling much stronger I'm going to work on building my endurance and my speed. I'm also going on vacation in about a month and I want to be in fantastic shape by the time I go because, hello, bikini season has arrived!

So, to help me get in better shape I'm starting a 30 day running challenge. My goal is to run at least 1 mile per day, every day, for 30 days in a row. That will cut into my vacation a little bit but I'll still be able to run while I'm away.

Today was day 1 and I ran 1.12 miles in about 9:27 which is an 8:28 pace, pretty fast for me. My screenshot unfortunately didn't grab the time but I promise, it was about 9:27!!

Obviously I want to increase my distance by the end of the 30 days, and my speed. My plan is to alternate days. Today was a "run a mile as fast as you can without passing out" day. Tomorrow will be a slower 2.5 maybe 3 miler. 3 days per week I'll run as fast as I can for as long as I can, minimum of 1 mile. 3 other days I'll run at a comfortable pace for as long as I can. The final day of each week I'll run fairly slow and it will be my longest run of the week.

My running partner (isn't she adorable?) can run for-freaking-ever so my other goal is run so far that she gets tired. Unlikely to happen but it's something to strive for!

I'm using MapMyRun and if you'd like to follow you can search for me by yahoo email - saramgarcia1986@yahoo.com

Do you have any goals you'd like to accomplish in 30 days? If so, share it! I'd love to hear about your progress and how you kept motivated because trust me, I'll need motivation.

Etsy Treasury Tuesday - Minty Leaves of Summer

I love all things mint this summer. The color is gorgeous and goes so well with just about everything. These are just a handful of the items I adore on Etsy and if I had millions of dollars I would purchase every single one in a heartbeat! Unfortunately I am not a millionaire so treasuries will just have to do for now.
